It took MaRee two full years to figure out what was happening to her body, and at the end of that frustrating journey she faced the one diagnosis she most feared — ALS.
It’s not uncommon for ALS diagnoses to play out this way. It’s a process of elimination, a whack-a-mole game of symptoms and treatments that narrows over time to a terrible, singular path — eventually, your brain will lose connection with your muscles and you will lose your ability to walk, talk, eat and eventually breathe.
Of all the diseases we’ve discussed on the podcast, this is the one that strikes fear into most hearts. And MaRee’s generous heart is no exception.
MaRee has been a proud hospice nurse for 17 years. She’s cared for ALS patients and knows what’s coming. As soon as her diagnosis was clear, she took the advice she knows is right — Don’t wait for anything. Whatever you want to do in life, do it now.
She quit her job, sold her house, and has been traveling with her family ever since.
Her story is one of a family reintegrated, of bucket list trips stacked high, of letting go and holding on, and of a deeply committed caregiver facing the reality of now needing care herself.
